MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Core Competency #6: Powerful Questioning
Anyone of the 50+ coaches who attended the May 13th Chapter and experienced the outstanding clinic on "Powerful Questioning" by Deborah Reedal, PCC and Susan McKay, MCC, felt first hand the power and "client movement" of masterful questioning. Tiger Woods and PGA pros make the difficult look simple. Susan and Deborah did just that! They delved deeper, probed further into the core of the matter and painted a map of greater client clarity which produced results before our very eyes!
In the true flow and art of coach questioning, revelations of new information, new awarenesses are unleashed, new "thinking space" and new perspectives come into play. It is precisely this inquiring versus telling methodology that truly marks a great coach and sparks new growth in a client. Practice, practice, practice of this questioning technique is really the defining characteristic which separates training and consulting activity from the essence of coaching. The powerful convergence of Coaching Presence, Active Listening and Powerful Questioning, when combined "co-creatively" with a client, simply sparkle and shine as new life is spawned and a client bravely steps out and up.
For me, as your President this year, it is very humbling to stand shoulder to shoulder with so many great coaches at NW Coaches Association activities and witness first hand the caring, insightful bravery that fellow coaches exhibit with one another by asking powerful questions. Listening to stories of coach-client relationships and "aha" moments is exhilarating. Coaches actually pause and sweep out "thinking room" on a myriad of personal issues to get precious fuel for growth from fellow coaches. That's what our monthly Chapter meetings are all about. That's what ICF membership ($195 per year) is all about: YOUR GROWTH & NEW FUEL to rejuvenate your coaching practice.
A favorite article: The Art of Powerful Questions, "Catalyzing Insight, Innovation, and Action" by Eric E Vogt, Juanita Brown, and David Isaacs.
MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What Makes One Coach Training Program a Fit for You versus all of the Others?
Coach Training Selection Criteria: One of the goals for the Education Committee for 2008 is to systematically bring to the attention of the membership upcoming local and regional coach training opportunities. Many of us return to coach training programs to develop not only the knowledge and skill base, but also the competence, confidence, and competencies that are required to be effective and current in the coaching profession.
As you see coach training that is interesting, how will you decide which training opportunities are the best fit for you?
What have you noticed is the educational criteria that has made a difference to your success over your life time?
Learning Styles: It is quite clear that all of us learn in different ways and express ourselves through our various personal learning styles. This is because each one of us embody different and distinct cognitive, emotional and physical strengths and weaknesses that typically call for various types of delivery in classrooms and programs to ensure learner success. There is a range of training experiences available. Some are in person and on site whereas others are computer and telephone based or a combination thereof.
What has made the difference for you in your learning and development? How important to you is the quality of the materials provided, and how important are skilled and knowledgeable instructors? What difference did the classroom structure itself play in your success? What about the quality and level of technology in the classroom, or are you so much of an independent learner that you thrive when the classroom itself is virtual?
Content Areas: In addition to continuing to develop your core coaching skills and knowledge, many areas of specialization are available to expand or deepen your coaching business. Whatever your area of interest-from ADHD Coaching to Leadership Coaching, you can get an idea of the range of training programs available by reviewing Coach Training on the ICF website at www.coachfederation.org
