MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear friends,
Over coffee recently, a former NWCA member asked me if I truly believed that membership in a local coaches organization was necessary to my business.
"Necessary?"
Hmmm. My first impulse was to say without reservation that of course it is necessary to my business, but the way he asked the question caused me to pause just a moment before I answered to really think through my response.
Is is necessary to share best practices with my colleagues in person, I wondered. Yes, and the best place I know to find those colleagues is at the monthly NWCA meetings.
Is it necessary to learn new coaching modalities and brush up on my coaching and business skills every month, I pondered. Yes, and again, the only place I know of that offers such programming specifically for coaches is our NWCA meetings.
Is is necessary to meet and mingle with new coaches, experienced coaches, and the coach- curious, I asked myself. Yes, if only for the electrifying excitement of being with others who have felt and heeded the same call that brought me to coaching.
Is is necessary to feel a part of something larger than myself, and share that community with others in real time and in person? Is it necessary to create the strategic alliances and relationships that have helped build my practice into a real business?
"Necessary? I believe that would be an unqualified YES," I told him.
So what about you? How is the NWCA necessary to your business? Will you tell me your reasons at our next meeting? Hope to see you then!
Warmly, Ronnie
NWCA MEMBERSHIP CONNECTIONS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Listening, Learning & Loving". The three "Ls" of every significant coaching connection. I recently attended a graduation at the University of Portland, and the baccalaureate speaker, Sr Catherine Ross, President of Heritage College in Toppenish, Washington outlined her address with these three Ls.
Listening is foremost in each and every significant communication. Gathering data and converting it to knowledge and comprehension is always a crucial first step. Without true comprehension, it's like someone's lips are moving but no intelligible message is coming across to another's consciousness. Listening is more than just hearing a sound. It is being open, curious and eager to learn. It's a posture and attitude that marks every great coach.
Learning is what takes place like scrabble, when the pieces start to fit. Aha! Research, analysis, exploration and dreaming all happen in the second stage of connection. But the outcome will be seriously flawed if the listening was incomplete with the smallest of clues missing. Growth, power, energy, motivation all spring from phase two of the coaching experience.
Loving is a mystery. Yet loving emanates clues of greatness, majesty, wonderment and possibilities which are the crowning moments of lives lived with purpose and meaning. It's the coaching connection with clients or fellow coaches that hones the skills of listening and learning which finally produce sparks of loving relationships to persons or goals that make all the difference.
Have you connected the energizing, transforming links of the three "Ls" of coaching lately? Come to our June 13th NWCA meeting and discover a new clue!

Your Programs Team: Colleen Bourassa Feroshia Knight
PRE-MEETING from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Loving What Is: An Introduction to The Work of Byron Katie What is The Work of Byron Katie? The Work is a process that clears the mind. It is one of the most powerful tools ever devised to end human suffering. It is simple, radical, and life changing. Everyone can do The Work. It requires no religious, no spiritual or intellectual preparation, no belief and no psychological acuteness--just a desire to re-know the simple truth about you. The simplest definition of The Work is: four questions and a turnaround. It is a living meditation that leaves us clear and informed. Tina will introduce and explain how The Work works, and demonstrate it with participants. The Work is a profound tool for coaches and many coaches across the country are finding it valuable in their practice.
Tina Tau McMahon is a facilitator of The Work. She is a graduate of Byron Katie's School for The Work, and is the Portland host for the upcoming three day Intensive for The Work in Vancouver. She offers workshops and individual facilitation. Tina also works as a spiritual director and runs a dreamwork group. She is a poet and writer and is currently working on a book about receiving guidance from dreams.
NETWORKING from 6:30-7 p.m. Get to know the other members, meet new people, and become known yourself!
MAIN MEETING from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Unfolding the Infinite Interior with Renee Poindexter How do we facilitate the awareness of the infinite potential that lies within each and every one of us? Why does it feel like such a struggle to find the passion that gives one a sense of purpose? These questions are core to the practice of coaching and lead us to reflect on how these inquiries relate to our life-long learning process.
Renee will provide an experience for us to "see" who we are with new eyes, so that a shift in perspective will impact how we look at learning what it truly means to be human. The practice of designing oneself, from the inside out, is not only possible, it is the most natural way to unfold one's authentic self. And the best news of all, if truly embraced, it will shift the way we look at our assumptions about our educational process.
Imagine how the world would be different if each of us were given the tools to understand who we are, how we learn and ways to be excellent and successful in areas that interested us. What if this process was core for us when we were children; how would it have impacted the quality of our lives?
Renee's response to these inquiries comes from her work as a former English teacher, a business consultant and executive coach, and from her work as a facilitator with SelfDesign Learning Systems.
SelfDesign is a methodology developed by Brent Cameron through his work with children over 23 years. Renee has collaborated with Brent on various projects since 1986. What makes the SelfDesign methodology unique is that it came from observing the natural process of children learning in their project based environment called Wondertree.
One of the greatest geniuses of our time-Buckminster Fuller was noted for his saying "Thinking like a genius is thinking like a child." The research that has led to the SelfDesign Learning Systems has bridged this gap by bringing curiosity and enthusiasm and combining it with knowledge and understanding and it is now available for any thinking person who wants to better understand how they work as a human being. SelfDesign: Nurturing Genius Through Natural Learning, by Brent Cameron. Published by Sentient Publications. www.selfdesign.com
Renee Poindexter is the founder of Living the Potential Network, a collabortorium, and a founding consultant with SelfDesign Learning Systems. Her interest in the wellness industry led her to her work with Oasis Life Sciences, an emerging international biotech company. She is an accomplished trainer, facilitator, success coach and organizational consultant who has over twenty years' experience that spans the fields of advertising, healthcare, financial services, and technology. Her background in sales, marketing and continuous improvement has assisted her in designing programs for high performance as well as in building leadership teams.
